TAKE ACTION: STOP PRISON EXPANSION IN CALIFORNIA!
Urge the California Department of Corrections to REJECT the "California Model"—Governor Newsom's ill-defined proposal to rebrand California state prisons. Instead of saving California billions by closing more state prisons, the 2023-24 Enacted Budget allocates $380 million to construction for the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. Replicating the "California Model" in other prisons across the state would cost more than $20 billion over 25 years. The California Model's focus on a "new philosophy of incarceration" is contradictory to and a distraction from urgent decarceration priorities. With continued downward trends in the incarcerated population, the state MUST continue to move forward with more prison closures, releases, and investments in community-based services proven to support our communities more than prisons ever could.
